Leave your first comment

Open the CommentLane Library in desktop Chrome and choose Sign in with Google. The first-comment guide walks you through adding a private note to text or an image. You can also see examples without signing in.

Google sign-in is blocked

Check which Google account is selected. It needs access to your CommentLane documents, and you need to allow the permissions requested at sign-in. If Google still blocks access, send us the exact message. For a work or school account, your account administrator may need to allow CommentLane.

A shared group hasn’t appeared

After Google sign-in and consent, shared groups appear automatically when CommentLane syncs. You do not need to accept an email invitation or join each group. If you used an earlier version, choose Sign in with Google once to review the updated Drive permission. Your existing comments and drafts are preserved.

Check that the owner shared the group with the exact account shown in CommentLane. Try opening its Google Doc with that account, check Archived in the Library, and use Sync now to check immediately. A sleeping browser or a network error can delay automatic sync. If the Doc opens but comments remain missing, send us the error message.

New recipients are sent a Google sharing notification. Inviting someone who already has access does not resend it, and the extension cannot confirm email delivery. Access to the document does not depend on receiving that email.

A comment or reply hasn’t appeared

CommentLane checks for updates automatically while Chrome is running and connected, and requests a fresh check when you open or return to the Library or a supported page. Large groups can take longer to load. For an immediate check, choose Sync now (or Retry sync after an error). Check the active Google account, your network connection and the group’s error message. If Google temporarily limits requests, CommentLane waits and tries again. You can still read eligible comments already saved on this device. A group’s access error appears beside that group; it does not stop other groups from updating.

If a save says it’s waiting for confirmation from Google, keep the draft and sync again. CommentLane checks whether it was saved. Submitting another copy before that check finishes can create a duplicate.

Comments are missing from a page

Open the extension icon and enable CommentLane on the site. Check that comments aren’t paused or hidden and that the group isn’t archived. Some browser pages and websites don’t support comments. If the original text moved, disappeared or appears more than once, you can still read the conversation and its saved page details in the Library.

Why does Chrome mention browsing history?

Chrome uses this wording for the navigation permission CommentLane needs to check which page is open and show its comments. The privacy policy explains what page information the extension reads and saves.

Edit or delete your comment

Open the ⋯ menu on your own comment and choose Edit or Delete. Editing keeps it linked to the same part of the page. Deleting removes the comment and its replies for everyone with access, so check the confirmation before continuing.

If Google has not confirmed the change, keep your text and sync again. If the comment changed while you were editing, copy your changes before reopening the editor.

Disconnect, export or remove data

You can disconnect your Google account from the Library. To save a copy of your data, open Settings and choose Download JSON. The file includes conversations and drafts currently loaded for that account. Export unsent work before uninstalling the extension.

Google documents and their sharing remain in Google Drive after disconnecting or uninstalling. Manage those documents in Drive or Docs and revoke authorization in your Google account connections. For details about retained drafts, caches and exports, see your privacy controls.
